Peinan Cultural Park is close to Taitung new station. The park exhibits excavated antiques of the Peinan Site. As an archaeological site, there is still archaeological work going on. Peinan Cultural Park is a place for both education and leisure purposes.
In 1980, Taitung new station, then called as Peinan station, was under construction. Excavators excavated the Peinan Site that was asleep underground for thousands of years, and the Peinan Site was uncovered before people’s eyes. As the construction of the new station had to continue, the Peinan Site was damaged severely. At that time, Taiwan University Archaeology professor Wen Shiun, Sung recommended building an outdoor museum in Peinan site. In 1991, the site was arranged as Peinan Cultural Park. After the opening of National Museum of Prehistory, Peinan Cultural Park became Taiwan’s first site park four months later.
The main role of Peinan Cultural Park it to exhibit the Peinan Site. The exhibition includes stone tombs, artifacts, and others. The most famous one among them is the moon-like stone pillar at the back of Taitung new station, which pillar is rated as the first-class historic monument. Nowadays Peinan Cultural Park continues to proceed with archaeological excavation. On the one hand, the park preserves the Site and to exhibit for public, and on the other side it has multiple functions for academic researches and education.
The grass field in the park is spacious. In addition, there are education hall, performing ground, indigenous plant forest, on-site archaeological playground, and others in the park. Once standing on the observatory, one can have a whole view on Tai-Tung city. To enjoy the grass field, to learn the ancient and beautiful stories, and to appreciate stone and jade artifacts, Peinan Cultural Park is an ideal place.
