Story of Sinliao Waterfall Trail

Sinliao waterfall trail is located in Jhong-Shan village in Yilan county. In the upstream of Sinliao river valley is Sinliao Waterfall. Sinliao river originates at Mt. Sinliao whose elevation is 980 meters. Due to many faults in the area, along the river 10 waterfalls were formed, and Sinliao waterfall is the lowest one. From Sinliao waterfall Sinliao river rushes eastward and convenes with Jiaoliao river, and finally it becomes Yilan people’s hope river – Dongshan river.

Sinliao waterfall trail is 3.4 kilometers long for a round trip. In the middle, the trail appears as shape of P and it is one-way. It is easy to complete the journey within 2 hours by walking. To protect the ecological environment, the number of tourists allowed to enter the trail is limited to be below 500 people, and this job is executed by the volunteers of Jhong-Shan community. This community-sponsored trail is abundant of ecological variety, beautiful sceneries, and proper facilities, so it does not only attract tourists from all around, but also brings the people of Jhong-Shan community together.

In the early days, Sinliao waterfall was not easily accessible. The road condition was bad, and normally people needed to get through of water to reach the destination. Although the waterfall was not far away, not many tourists would like to go. In order to allow more people to get to this wonderful place easily, in 2005 Forestry Bureau built the Sinliao waterfall trail as known today, and then the waterfall could be reached easily.

In the beginning 150 meters, the trail is paved with wood chips which are acquired from residuals of sawed timber. The trail paved with wood chips has water permeability and provides flexibility. In addition, it emits a slight fragrance of pythoncidere. Due to its ecological construction method and the use of natural material, Sinliao waterfall trail presents its most natural and beautiful appearance.
